Mat’s Journey: From Living with Nan to Building Independence in a SIL Home

Mat working on his garden

The Situation

Mat had always lived with his grandmother in a cozy home, where she took care of him and helped with everything. But as he grew older, he started to feel a desire for more independence. Mat wanted to learn how to manage his own space and take care of himself. After speaking with his support team, Mat decided it was time to transition into a shared Supported Independent Living (SIL) home.

At first, the change was overwhelming. Moving into a new house with new people felt like a huge leap. Mat struggled to manage his daily routine, and some days, he felt homesick and uncertain about his ability to succeed in this new chapter of his life. He found it hard to make decisions, and simple tasks felt challenging.

The Solution

Gwendolyn Support Services was quick to recognise his concerns and worked with him to create a personalised plan to build his skills and confidence. The plan focused on two main areas: household tasks and gardening skills.

Mat was helped with to break down tasks into smaller, more manageable steps. Mat continuing to grow in how to prepare and cook his meals. Mat has also growing and gaining more confident in his laundry skills and organising his belongings.

But Mat’s real passion was gardening. He had always enjoyed helping his grandmother tend to her garden, so his Gwendolyn support services encouraged him to focus on developing his gardening skills. They provided him with the tools and knowledge to care for plants and flowers, starting with easy-to-grow plants like tomatoes and herbs and then moved onto flowers and plants.

The Outcome

Over time, Mat began to feel more comfortable in his new home. His routine became second nature, and he started handling his daily tasks independently. He was especially proud of his gardening achievements—his little garden blossomed, and the flowers he planted started to bloom. Mat had found something he loved to do that not only helped him relax but also contributed to making the house a beautiful place for everyone to enjoy.

Tommy’s Growth through Physical Recreation

Resident playing putt putt golf

The Situation

Tommy, an NDIS participant, faced challenges in developing his motor skills and engaging in recreational activities. He wanted to be more physically active but often struggled with finding suitable activities that could help improve his coordination while being enjoyable. This limited his ability to participate in group outings and recreational events, impacting his confidence and physical health.

The Solution

Gwendolyn Support Services designed a support plan for Tommy that introduced him to recreational activities that aligned with his interests and needs. One activity that stood out was mini-golf. Playing mini-golf allowed Tommy to work on his hand-eye coordination and motor skills in a fun, low-pressure environment.

The staff provided guidance and encouragement throughout the sessions, helping Tommy develop his technique and improve his balance and coordination. Mini-golf quickly became a regular part of Tommy’s recreational routine, giving him a sense of achievement with every game.

The Outcome

Tommy’s participation in mini-golf has greatly improved his motor skills and confidence. He enjoys the activity and looks forward to each session, where he continues to make progress. The structured support from Gwendolyn Support Services has not only helped Tommy improve physically but has also boosted his self-esteem and enthusiasm for group activities. Mini-golf has become an outlet for him to have fun, develop skills, and build friendships with his peers.
